Our guide to help dancers everywhere get in the holiday spirit!

~~

Do artfully place mistletoe around the studio to snatch a smooch from your crush between combinations.

Don’t think that getting rid of your foot fungus counts as an actual gift.

Do jingle up your dance belt with some fun sleigh bells. Think Blitzen!

Don’t stow a flask in your faux fur dance belt. You might miss the combination while you’re discreetly sipping.

Do light up your tights with LED lights!

Don’t leave your dance belt outside to dry on a cold winter’s night.

Do have a Happy Holidays from Stance on Dance! See you in 2020!

Don’t forget to buy new tights to ring in the new decade!

For the past five years, Stance on Dance has served the greater dance community by exposing the secret world of dance belts. From couture belts and famous belts to multi-cultural belts and political belts, we revel in the simple beauty of covering a hunky dancer dude’s loins.

Dance belts have an exciting and rich history, just like other, more dull forms of dancewear (i.e. tutus and pointe shoes). Check out the different trends and styles of dance belts through the decades!

1920s: An Era of Rapid Change

No longer confined to stiff social conventions, dance belts increasingly threw caution to the wind by infusing color and flair. Feathers and fringe were all the rage!

Dance Belts Decades-1920s

1950s: Sleek and Slender Elegance

Shifting social norms dictated modesty while simultaneously embracing charm and appeal. A clean waistline kept dance belts both fastidious and glamorous!

Dance Belts Decades-1950s

1970s: A Foray into Flamboyance

Polyester was the name of the game, along with bright colors and floral patterns. Dance belts became brazenly obscene when worn under white tights.

Dance Belts Decades-1970s

1990s: The Days of Punk and Grunge

Dance belts reflected three general rules: comfortable, dirty and heavily steeped in flannel. Fun (but gross fact): most dance belts of the time were bought in thrift stores!

It’s another Christmas Eve. The Rat King has been banished. The Sugar Plum Fairy and her entourage have taken off for the night. Clara and her hot Nutcracker man friend are left alone in her parents’ house. What happens next? What do you think happens next?! Think along the lines of “Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire,” but a tad racier…

xmas-bunion-page-001

Dance belts hanging from an empty barre

Sweat-stained tights adorn the door

Lipstick rolls out the dance bag to the center

With the contour of a kiss smeared on the mirror

Everybody knows Tchaikovsky and some mistletoe

Make a dance belt fit too tight (if you know what I mean)

Fondus deepen, pirouettes loll

And développés only reach dégagé-height

The Nutcracker prince is on his way

He’s making Clara swoon with each grand jeté

The way he threw the Rat King in a trance

It’s clear that Clara wants to do more than dance

And so as you make plans for Christmas Eve

Remember this lusty tale so true

If your dance belt goes from being on to en l’air

Then a very merry Christmas to you!

It’s an election year, and political divisions run deep. Gun control, income inequality, immigration, foreign policy…what really matters to voters? It can be hard to know amidst all the media hype, but Stance on Dance has gone straight to the root of what this election is about: dance belts. Yep, underneath those dull suits are the real personalities.

Let’s start with the Republican field. The primaries began with 12 candidates, but by the middle of March had dwindled to three: Ted Cruz, John Kasich and Donald Trump.

Ted Cruz is a tea-party Christian, which is clearly reflected in his Jesus-studded belt.

belts Ted CruzJohn Kasich is an old-school, red-tie Republican who applies his approach to politics straight to his belt.

belts John Kasich

Donald Trump is a rich businessman, and his belt reflects his megalomaniac values.

Based on their belts, it shouldn’t come as any surprise why Trump’s flashy belt has made him the presumptive nominee.

On the democratic side, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders have been vying for liberal hearts and minds.

Bernie Sanders stands for the every-man, and his belt reflects his proletarian values.

belts Bernie Sanders

Hillary Clinton is a divisive and decisive true blue dem, playing the game with the best of them.

Or is she? Her willingness to stuff a sock and still wear lace shows why she’s the frontrunner of her party.

Voters, choose wisely. Are we sticking with the good ol’ belt establishment, or letting a lady take the lead?

Nothing else is quite so unique to being a male ballet dancer as having donned a dance belt at some point. The dance belt is more than just a jockstrap; it’s a tradition carried down through generations of great dancers. So what are some of the great dance belts of yore?

Have you ever stopped and really thought about dance belts? Why are they always flesh-colored? Do male dancers have design options?

Searching “dance belts” online yields a plethora of dance accessory sites featuring endless identical belts. What a bore.

What if men could be proud of their dance belts? What if wearing one was a form of self-expression? What if dance belts went beyond protection and concealment? White tights be damned!

Male dancers everywhere: wear these designs if you dare.
