At both the San Francisco Movement Arts Festival and BayAreaDanceWatch we’ve been doing that for over 10 years now, but two years ago we ran an ad for a dancer in a wheel chair because we wanted to create a certain visual image in a grand cathedral. (Grace Cathedral) Some of the responses to the ad were quite telling. A couple folks even questioned and suggested we needed to go thru AXIS for that. Seriously. They were literally saying AXIS is the Gatekeeper for that. For us it was Interesting some people view AXIS as such.

Thanks Jimmy! Yes, there are various terminology preferences. Excited to see how your integrated mobility modern dance company develops!

I was introduced to Axis in 2017 via Dance/NYC-DDA in Fall/Winter 2017 into 2018, shortly after my below the knee Amputation. I was at a meeting with Monmouth Arts Council(im in the Jersey Shore area, birthing an Integrated Mobility Modern Dance Company in Monmouth County)last Thursday about Grants to Assist Artists with Mobility Challenges as well as making venues more accessible to Audience members with Mobility issues. The facilitator of the Meeting mentioned some Artists claim the Term “Disabled”, though Term is not often used. “Wheelchair User” was s term the facilitator mentioned also. Im learning much, exponentially and this Article nourished me in the implementation of my own Vision. Im grateful for this.
