Let’s be honest: there is no one manlier than a male dancer. The muscles, the form, the power; we can all admit that a good male dancer is the very essence of machismo. That’s why we bring you MAN MONTH here on Stance on Dance. May will feature a variety of content covering the male dancer experience. So let’s start off with experiencing some manly dance!

biscuits

Please pass the biscuits!

You know better than to see a show dry, but now that you know it’s MAN MONTH, you’re probably wondering what the appropriate macho drink is to bring in your flask.

Well, if you’re going to see something that involves tights, leaps and dance belts, bring a Stuffed – two parts vodka, one part white port and one green olive. Serve in a chilled flask.

If you’re going to see some dudes do the robot dance, bring a Stiff – straight scotch. And don’t you dare water it down.

If you’re going to see something along the lines of this male tango for two, bring a Bromance – crush some ice into your flask and add coffee liqueur, vodka and amaretto. Finish with a dash of cinnamon.

And if you find yourself watching tap dance, make sure you’re drinking a Tap That – layer peppermint schnapps, Kahlua and rum in your flask and burn for 15 seconds. Yep, you read that right. Light that fire.

Okay, enough said. Enjoy the inherent manliness of dance.

There are two things that Ryan loves in this life: good drinks and good dance. And like peanut butter and jelly, they’re best when combined. In other words, Ryan never sees a dance show without flask in hand, complimenting each show with a cocktail specifically catered to that particular performance.

Ryan_spring_flask3

Sometimes he misses his flask.

You know the saying “April showers bring May flowers”? In some circles the saying goes: April drinks bring May dances. Spring is in the air, and no one knows it like the dance community and Ryan. What’s he concocting for…

…that Maypole festival in the park?

I’m not quite sure why, but I’m picturing a bunch of stoned people playing tether ball.  Regardless, dancing around a pole is always fun, so let’s make a “Pole Dancer.” Coffee-flavored Patron, dash of Bailey’s.

…that end-of-the-school-year student recital?

Hey you proud dance parents! Show the PTA what’s up! Grab your camera and flask and make a “Parent of the Year.” Jaeger, Malibu and pineapple juice.

…that modern dance piece metaphorically about rebirth?

Let’s give a shout out to the OG of rebirth by making a “Jesus is That You?” Straight red wine. Get it at your nearby church.

…that impromptu breakdance performance on the street corner because it’s finally nice enough to bust a move outside?

I’m standing by, sipping a “When the Beat Drops,” because come on, when the beat drops it’s a game changer. For all you San Franciscans, this drink is the tall boy of your choice in a brown paper bag while at the GG or Dolores Park.

Spring into dance shows with any one of these drinks and you’re guaranteed a good time. And remember, Stance on Dance is not responsible for your alcoholic transgressions, so please drink (and dance) responsibly.

An outdoor dance show could strike at any moment!

Are you considering seeing a dance show at some point this March? Might I make a suggestion? Don’t go dry.

Yes, that’s right. Take a flask. Sip your way through port de bras, kicks and turns. Glug your way through duets making use of negative space. People go to movies or music shows and enjoy a light beverage; why can’t they do the same for dance?

Your dance-drink guru Ryan is here to guide you. Ryan pre-parties for dance shows the way sports fans tailgate or the way groupies line up outside a venue hours before the show. His devotion to dance is unparalleled. Who is he? Oh just a regular Joe. He’s in marketing and goes to the gym after work. But come the weekend he is dance’s greatest fan, eagerly awaiting the hottest classical, contemporary and ethnic dance shows.  He blows off girlfriends and wastes untold savings on liqueurs in savage anticipation of the newest dance premiers. He diligently plans his dance calendar for each month, carefully considering the perfect libation for each show which he will bring in his flask.

I know what you’re thinking: “I’m going to a dance show, but how do I know what drink to bring in my flask?” Let Ryan guide you. And remember, never mix the words dance show and dry.

Ryan Kelley flasking

Sometimes it’s best to flask incognito!

Ryan’s tips for March dance-viewing:

Going to see an experimental work in progress? Something raw and unfinished? I have two perfect drinks for this type of show.  The first is an “Unfurnished Apartment.” Gin, simple syrup, champagne and mint.  After a couple sips you’ll notice it’s missing something.  And it is…purposely. I can’t tell you what though, so embrace this funky drink.  Don’t mess with a work in progress kids.

And if you’re not a fan of gin please make a “This Will Totally Change BTW.” Vodka, pineapple, cranberry and triple sec.

Going to see a classical ballet? Something along the lines of Swan Lake or Giselle? I could be off here, but isn’t ballet one of the many beasts that triggered all you dancers to get into the biz anyway?  If this is not the case, this drink ain’t for you. However, if you can relate, please make a “I Can Still Do That, Right?” Blend cantaloupe, lime juice, Cointreau, and tequila until smooth.  Enjoy.

Other options for the drink name:  “Dang, I Should Really Get My Ass in Ballet Class Tomorrow.”

Going to see a college dance showcase? Does it feature six pieces by different members on the faculty?  You’ll definitely want a “Facultea Delight.” Steep two bags of passion fruit tea in whiskey, infuse that shit, and add lemon. The faculty concert was never more enjoyable.

Going to see a site-specific piece in your local park or art museum? Let’s make the “Geo-Targeted Dancer.” Muddle rosemary and peach + whiskey + lemon juice + maple simple syrup. You never know where dance, or you, might end up!

Remember dance viewers, flasks are supposed to be discrete.  Stance on Dance is not responsible for any drinking tickets given out for the month of March.  Please Flask responsibly.

Carolina Lugo’s and Carolé Acuña’s Ballet Flamenco

Are you in need of a sultry Spanish night or a bohemian adventure? Brace yourself for a night when the well-worn hardwood floors of Pachamama resonate with the pulsating sounds of footwork, song, castanets, syncopated hand clapping and guitar.

Drink Selection: Take a date and make “The Fertile Sangria.” Muddle pears, apples, cherries and oranges.  Pour half malbec and pinot noir, blackberry brandy, and peach schnapps over ice. Shake, pour and enjoy.

Palanza Dance

“Close” is a new group work developed in RAW (resident artist workshop).

Drink Selection: Close to what, you ask? I’m making a “Close-to-Drunk Martini” because if I’m not already drunk, this will get me pretty close.  Shake gin and Looza Pear Nectar over ice.  Sip and enjoy.

Fri-Sat, Feb 7-8, 8pm, $10-20

The Garage, 715 Bryant St, SF

Mills College Dance Alumni

From a tongue-in-cheek look at lost love to a somatic and sonic installation, “Ebb+Flow 2014” features the works of Mills Dance Alumni Jalila Bell, Rebekah Brown, Garth Grimball, Megan Nicely, Sandi Scheuber and a collaboration by Amy Lewis, Janet Das & Sonsherée Giles.

Drink Selection: You Mills Alumni are a little over my head.  I’ll be drinking Miller Lite while I over-think these pieces.  I mean, have you seen the throw back can?

Hamburg Ballet

San Francisco Ballet is pleased to welcome the Hamburg Ballet back to the Opera House stage in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

“Miriam” is a personal and immersive dance-theater installation that reverberates with tensions between public expectations and private desires.

Drink Selection: I’ll be making two drinks for this show. The first drink is inspired by public expectationsa “No One Pees in the Shower.” Tequila, orange juice and blue curacao. For the second drink, inspired by private desires, please make a “I Pee in the Shower.” Vodka, lemon juice and a splash of simple syrup.

Split – Holly Rothschild / Roya Carreras

Choreographer Holly Rothschild will debut two new dance works featuring Genevieve Carson, Andrew Pearson and Drea Sobke.  A third piece, a collaboration with Robin Cook entitled “Kitchen Sink,” is an exploration of the extremes of audience engagement.

Drink Selection: An exploration of the extremes of audience engagement?! I’ve seen a lot of crazy stuff on stage and I don’t ALWAYS want to get involved. This drink has nothing to do with Meat Loaf and everything to do with the piece.  Therefore, we are making an “I’ll do Anything for Love, but I Won’t do That.” Rum, blackberry brandy, crème de banana, pineapple and grenadine.

Fri-Sat, Feb 14-15, 8:30pm, $15-20

Benita Bike’s DanceArt

How do dancers create dances? How do they change movement into mood, image and story? These questions and more are answered when Benita Bike’s DanceArt performs at the La Crescenta Library. Dances are performed, and audience members have numerous opportunities to interact with the artists.

Drink Selection: Popular to contrary belief, “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” was not invented in the 1990s as a policy for gays and lesbians in the military.  That’s right, it was invented in 2014 for Stance on Dance’s February Flask edition when I read, “How do dancers create dances?”  For this piece, make a “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” Muddle together blueberries, sugar and mint leaves.  Pour in ice, light rum and lime juice. Top with soda water. You’re welcome.

Sat, Feb 15, 2pm, free

2809 Foothill Blvd., La Crescenta

LA Dance Project

Benjamin Millepied’s “Reflections” and Justin Peck’s “Murder Ballads” will be performed at The Theatre at Ace Hotel, formerly the historic United Artists Theatre.

Drink Selection: Reflections and murder ballads make me think of the movie “American Psycho”.  Therefore, let’s make an “American Psycho!” In a shaker, muddle oranges, cherries, apples and sugar together. Add a dash of bitters. Top with ice and whiskey. Shake, pour and enjoy.

Thurs-Sat, Feb 20-22, $20-125

The Theatre at Ace Hotel, 933 South Broadway, Los Angeles

Blind Tiger Society

“The Aftermath Affair” transforms the ODC Theater building into a place of extravagance, mystery, celebration and curiosity.

Drink Selection: For this piece, make a “Tiger Claw.” Muddle blueberries, a slash of Cointreau and as much vodka as you can stand and pour over ice.  Add a dash of cinnamon, but don’t tell anyone (that’s the mystery part). Trust me, in the aftermath of this drink, you’ll be blind.

Fri-Sun, Feb 28-Mar 2, 8pm, $18-25

There once was a dance enthusiast

Of all the arts he loved dance best

Each month he planned his calendar

To catch dance shows both near and far

But nary a show could he sit through

Without libation, cocktail or brew

No dance show ever felt complete

Without flask in hand and butt in seat

He sits and watches, drinks and burps

But God forbid he ever slurps

His heart grows warm, he starts to cry

He knows good dance is never dry

Ryan, your dance-enthusiast-aficionado, blows off girlfriends and wastes untold savings in savage anticipation of the hottest dance pieces premiering around California. He’s diligently planning his dance calendar for next month, perfecting each flask concoction.

So what dance shows are on the dance-flask menu this month?

Pre-gaming. We do it for sports; why not for dance?

Let’s make a “Smells like Teen Spirit.” Jack Daniels, sweet tea and Midori.  Float with Blue Curaco for “Floaters #1.”  For “Hybrid 3” I’ll be sipping a “Prius Bumper Sticker Slammer.” Malibu, amaretto, sweet and sour, and splash of orange juice.

Mary Armentrout

“Reveries and elegies” is a site specific performance project about change and dislocation, meandering through space and time.

Drink Selection: Meandering through space and time, eh? I am always looking for an excuse to revisit the 90s (clearly).  Thanks to this piece I am planning on mixing up a “Space Jam.” Citrus vodka, lime juice and jam. Pour, ice, shake and PUMP UP THE JAM.

Sat-Sun, Jan 4-5, 4:15pm; Jan 11-12, 4:30pm; Jan 18-19, 4:30pm; Jan 25-26; 4:45pm, $20

The Wooden Floor is a Santa Ana based dance company comprised of under-served youth. The company’s latest program features choreography by Herb Alpert Award-winner Susan Rethorst, New York-based choreographer Ivy Baldwin, and the company’s artistic director, Melanie Ríos Glaser.

Drink Selection: In honor of this great non-profit, I am flasking “The Giving Tree.” Gin, Framboise, lemon juice, one teaspoon of egg white and five raspberries.  Pour over ice, shake, top with soda water.  Please note, more than four…you end up on the floor.  Please drink responsibly.

Fri-Sat, Jan 17-18, 8:30 pm, $20

Redcat, 631 W. 2nd St, Los Angeles

Printz Dance Project

Over two years in the making, “Hover Space” takes athletic prowess to a new dimension on a tilting, hovering stage.

Drink Selection: A tilting, hovering stage? WOW.  Let’s make a “Danger Zone” (it tastes better than the friend zone).  Vodka, gin, tequila, rum, lemon-aid and sweet tea.

Fri, Jan 17, 8pm, $20-25

Old Town Temecula Community Theater, 42051 Main Street, Temecula

Lisa Townsend Dance

“FuGa: to chase or to flee” explores the aesthetic and dynamics found in film noir Cherchez la femme (look for the woman), a kinetic high contrast dream whose protagonist seduces her audience through the identities and words of women characters in film noir.

Drink Selection: Stir up a “Chase-Her.” Chop up pears, oranges, apples and pineapple.  In a shaker full of ice add in red wine, blackberry brandy, peach schnapps and dash of triple sec.  Shake and drain into flask.  If made properly you won’t need a chaser, but careful – she’s a strong one.

Ate9 dANCEcOMPANY

In “Meeting the Artist,” choreographer Danielle Agami offers an intimate look at a new creation, encouraging conversation and interaction between the artists and audience.

Drink Selection: A common question when meeting a dance artist is, “Can you do the splits?” Thus for this piece I am bringing a “Dancing Banana Split.” Banana liqueur, vodka, and a splash of amaretto. Rim your flask with amaretto and crushed vanilla waver cookies (repeat as necessary – that rim coating will only last about one sip).

Fri-Sat, Jan 24-25, 8pm, $15

Highways Performance Space, 1651 18th St, Santa Monica

Wayne McGregor and Random Dance

Inspired by the Age of Enlightenment and by the 18th century French philosopher Diderot’s very first set of encyclopedia, “Far” is both physical and immediate, yet intensely cerebral.

Drink Selection: Drink outside the flask for this one folks. It’s all about individualism here so pick a drink and container that you think best suites this performance. I’ll be drinking an “Encyclopedia Brown.” Muddle blueberries, cinnamon, simple syrup and Bulleit Bourbon together, shake over ice. I’ll be drinking out of a slick-looking thermos.

You know the spiel, how Jake and Ryan love watching dance. They love it so much they create a cocktail catered to each performance they attend, never showing up at a dance show without their flasks in hand. Every month for over the past year they’ve diligently planned their calendar around their favorite upcoming shows, blowing off dates and girlfriends, wasting untold savings on fancy liquors, and savagely anticipating the newest contemporary dance pieces premiering around the City.

But all good things must end. Yes, the worst is true: Jake and Ryan are parting ways, and each is leaving San Francisco for new horizons. This month Jake and Ryan have come together for the last time to plan their dance flasks. They might come together again one day to flask it up, but for now, it’s sayonara to flask!

And so we lowly dance enthusiasts look up to Jake and Ryan, titans of dance-drink pairings, and ask one more time: what’s in next month’s flask?

casebolt and smith
In “O(h),” a fast-paced dance-theater work, performance duo casebolt and smith demonstrate what they can, can’t – and won’t – do as dancers.

Drink Selection: Let’s test exactly what these dancers can, can’t and won’t do with the “Double Dog Dare.” We’ve seen dancers do just about anything and everything, from dancing disrobed, dancing in trash bags, covering themselves in honey and dirt, and thrusting pillows. Anything and everything goes in the name of art, so the stakes are pretty damn high! Bring it. Hot sauce with a shot of tequila.

Angela Mazziotta’s “We lay awake breathing grapes” is a solo about a woman who has something to say, but can’t get the words out. Part of SAFEhouse’s sixth annual Summer Performance Festival.

Drink Selection: Speaking of melting pots, you know what’s great? FONDUE! You can dip grapes, or other things, in delicious cheese or chocolate. YOLO it up and add a stout beer or a dessert wine to your fondue and bring some grapes, or other things, to dip in it.
